Knowledge Organisers
At Mayflower, the Knowledge Organiser is used as one of our 3 essential 'memory tools'. It contains the key knowledge we have selected for the pupils to learn by the end of that unit of study.
They contain a range of information, such as key facts and events, key 'tier 3' vocabulary and the key complex ideas with related examples. Pupils use these tools to support their written work (within their subject-specific sessions), and also by recalling the knowledge throughout the term - using it for self-testing and low-stake quizzes.
How you can use it at home
- Read through it together for a few minutes each day.
- Talk about the keywords and ask your child what they mean.
- Cover and recall: cover part of the organiser and ask your child to remember the information.
- Use quick quizzes by asking questions about facts, dates, definitions or concepts.
- Encourage regular practice 5–10 minutes several times a week is often more effective than one long session.
- Link learning to everyday life by discussing where the knowledge connects to books, TV programmes, trips or real-life experiences.
The aim is not for children to copy the information out, but to help them remember and understand the most important knowledge from their learning in school.
