If there is one thing that has defined this term in the Southwest, it has been the rain. Day after day of grey skies, wet playgrounds, and dark mornings and evenings could easily have set the tone for a challenging return after the Christmas break. Traditionally, the post-Christmas term can be one of the most difficult periods in the school calendar. Children are often tired, routines have been disrupted, and the excitement and stimulation of the festive period can leave many experiencing what is often referred to as the “post-Christmas blues.”

Yet, somewhat surprisingly, this term has told a very different story in our music lessons.

Despite the persistent rain and seasonal challenges, our classrooms have been filled with energy, creativity, and, most noticeably, joy. In fact, this has been one of the most musically productive post-Christmas terms we have experienced. Progress has been remarkable, engagement has been high, and the atmosphere has been vibrant and genuinely fun.

So why has this been the case?

There was no ceremony. No handover. No training. Someone has simply decided that you’re the best option - perhaps because you sing a bit, or because you once played cornet when you were twelve.

Suddenly, you’re responsible for music.

In primary school music education, our goal is not simply to teach children to decode symbols on a page, but to help them think musically. One of the most effective ways to do this - particularly within a Kodály-inspired curriculum - is by teaching note durations as relative rather than fixed.

Instead of presenting rhythms as abstract mathematical values, we describe them in musical terms: long and short, always in relation to one another. This seemingly simple shift has profound benefits for children’s musical understanding, sight-reading ability, and creative expression.

On Thursday morning, I visited our fellow PL2 school, Ford Primary School, to deliver a singing workshop for KS1 pupils (Year 1 and Year 2). The session focused on developing foundational vocal and musical skills that support healthy voice use, musical understanding, and long-term engagement with singing.

The aims of the workshop were to support pupils to:

explore and understand their own singing voice

internalise a steady beat

develop early pitch accuracy and rhythmic control

learn age-appropriate strategies for vocal care

These elements form the core of effective early vocal pedagogy and are widely recognised within music education research as critical to sustainable musical development.

From the first festive notes of rehearsals to the final joyful performances, this has been our busiest Christmas singing season yet - and without a doubt, one of the most rewarding we have ever experienced.

Throughout the season, all of our school choirs gave an incredible account of themselves. The MCA Children’s Choir, EarlyBirds, and City of Sons Boys Choir each rose to the occasion and delivered performances that were nothing short of sensational. Their hard work, dedication, and passion for music were clear to see and hear in every setting they performed in.

At Mayflower, music plays an important part in that journey. Singing and music-making are woven into daily routines and learning experiences, with every child taking part in weekly music and singing lessons. Yet, some of the most powerful musical moments happen not during lessons, but when children learn from each other.

While music is often celebrated in mainstream schools for its ability to inspire creativity, build confidence, and bring joy, in a specialised setting it also becomes a powerful tool for communication, emotional expression, and sensory regulation. For children who may face barriers with language or social interaction, music offers an alternative pathway to express themselves and connect with others in a way that feels natural, safe and rewarding.

This morning I had the privilege of leading a workshop at our sister PL2 school, Ford Primary. It was a vibrant session: voices warm, children smiling, and the air charged with possibility. Ford already has a rich tradition of music and singing, and our workshop had three goals:

1. To strengthen and grow their choir;

2. To encourage more boys to sing and potentially join our contemporary boys choir, City of Sons;

3. Above all, to continue building a stronger, living connection between Mayflower Community Academy and Ford Primary School.

As a music teacher, I believe deeply that connection is as important as technique, and that music – particularly singing – is one of the most powerful tools we have for building it. Here are some reflections on why starting in schools like this is vital, how singing drives connection, and how this can grow - into families, across staff and into the wider community.

As the Christmas season approaches, schools across the country are buzzing with preparations for carol services, nativity plays, and festive performances. For children, this time of year often means extended vocal use—not just in school but also during family gatherings and community events. Combined with winter illnesses and cold weather, these activities can put a strain on young voices. This made me reflect on the importance of teaching good vocal health, especially as someone who has personally experienced the damaging effects of a vocal injury.

At Mayflower Community Academy, we place a strong emphasis on vocal health as part of our music education. This isn’t just about producing better singers; it’s about teaching children to care for a vital tool they’ll use throughout their lives. From their very first music lessons in our foundation classes, we introduce our students to practices that prioritise vocal care.

There’s a common misconception that musicians, performers, and artists enjoy watching or listening to their own performances. After all, they spend years honing their craft and putting it out into the world for others to experience. But the truth is, many artists find revisiting their work uncomfortable, even unsettling. Elton John famously admitted that he dislikes listening to his old songs or watching past performances. When he does, he often finds himself critiquing the tiniest details, wishing he had done things differently. This type of self-criticism is often rooted in perfectionism, and while it can lead to moments of self-doubt, it can also serve as a powerful tool for artistic growth when used constructively.

For musicians, getting beyond the initial discomfort of watching themselves perform can open the door to self-improvement and refinement. Yes, it requires pushing past self-doubt and facing one’s anxieties head-on. But in doing so, artists gain the opportunity to identify areas for improvement, refine their technique, and ultimately create better work in the future. Self-reflection, when practiced with kindness and intention, becomes an invaluable part of the creative process.

During our most recent year 6 leavers assembly rehearsal, I watched something pretty amazing unfold. Every student - whether they were naturally confident singers or a bit hesitant - was singing with real joy and assurance. That wasn’t always the case. I’ve had plenty of conversations with colleagues from other schools who tell me things like, "I can’t get my boys to sing," or "Year 6s just won’t sing - they refuse!" But we’ve managed to flip that script at our school. Now, we’ve got a culture of singing that turns even the most reluctant students into enthusiastic singers. How did we get here? It all started by making singing an essential part of everyday school life, right from the moment students walk through the doors. It’s something we’ve woven into the fabric of not just our school, but our wider community too.

This week started with two teacher training days - a time for us as educators to step back, challenge our thinking, and expand our understanding of how children learn. Usually, these sessions kick off with an icebreaker: maybe a guest speaker or a team-building activity. This year, though, things were a bit different.

Imagine it: the first day back after a six-week break, Monday morning, 8:30 a.m. What’s the last thing you’d expect to be doing? Probably communal singing - but that’s exactly what we did.

Over the summer holidays, I was tasked with creating and leading a 15-minute workshop on getting 130 reluctant, self-proclaimed "non-singers" to sing together… as a choir. No small feat. As I stood in front of the room and saw the initial groans ripple across the staff - who were from both Mayflower and Ford - I knew I was about to face one of my toughest ‘gigs’ to date. But despite the palpable discomfort in the room, I held onto my belief in the power of singing. Once they got into it, I was certain they’d not only enjoy themselves but also gain real value from the experience.

This year, the Year 6 Leavers Assembly took on a new twist, yet it retained its timeless magic and charm. One of the highlights of the event was the much-anticipated year group song performance by the Year 6 students. Over the past few weeks, we had been meticulously working on an arrangement of Pink’s "Cover Me in Sunshine." As a cohort, we unanimously agreed that this song perfectly encapsulated the joyous spirit of the children. Its familiarity also made it accessible to those less confident in their singing abilities.

At the culmination of each unit in our Kodály music curriculum, our students engage in a simple Orff arrangement of a piece they’ve been studying. This practice has become a cornerstone of our teaching approach, yielding remarkable educational and developmental benefits.

Orff arrangements are musical pieces structured for performance using the Orff Schulwerk approach, an innovative method of music education developed by composer Carl Orff and his collaborator Gunild Keetman. These arrangements typically involve a variety of percussion instruments, such as glockenspiels, drums, and other pitched and unpitched percussion instruments. The key feature of Orff arrangements is their simplicity and accessibility. Designed with children and beginners in mind, they often feature straightforward, repetitive patterns that are easy to learn and play, making them ideal for young musicians.

Last June, while attending a youth music festival with my vocal group, organised by my friend and SEND music expert Stuart Penman, I was approached by Fiona Pendriegh, the head of Plymouth Youth Music Service. Fiona had noticed my passion for encouraging children to sing and wondered if this enthusiasm could help get more boys singing in our city. The challenge was set.

Recently, I observed a remarkable improvement in young children’s pitch-matching abilities through the integration of movement in their music lessons. Watching several children, aged 6-9, increase their confidence in pitch matching was a powerful testament to the benefits of dual coding, where they linked musical pitches with physical movement.
